THE CHALLENGE

The newly appointed IT Director at this CPG Group wanted to understand the current performance of the IT department and develop a roadmap for the next 3 years. IT had traditionally been viewed as distant from the business and focussed on running rather than driving business change and innovation.

Qedis was asked to develop an IT Strategy 3 year roadmap to:

  • Understand the business strategy & transformation agenda and translate these into priorities for the IT Group
  • Review the IT organisation and articulate the changes required to improve how they work and deliver value to the wider group
  • THE APPROACH

    Qedis undertook the exercise swiftly and explored both broader directions and specific strategic priorities. This meant the effort could be focussed accordingly and both the business & IT could begin preparing for the changes ahead. Qedis split the activity into three streams:

    • Externally focused: Working with the Change Team, Qedis explored how IT can help transform and support the business, and how it should interface with the Business
    • Internally focused: Creating working groups within IT, Qedis facilitated the development of the vision for the internal IT department, focussing on the four key areas – Applications, Infrastructure, People and Processes
    • 3 year outlook: From the above two areas, Qedis consolidated the information to create a vision for the IT department, a 3 year roadmap and a financial plan to outlay the overall direction of the IT department
    • THE RESULTS

      Qedis created a vision of what the ‘big rocks’ IT should focus on to enable the department to continue to function and support the Business in its transformational journey. The deliverables also included:

      • A detailed strategy exploring in depth the 3 streams above
      • An Executive Summary picking out the key messages, ready for presentation to the Group Board
      • A detailed Quarterly, Yearly and a high-level 3 year roadmap for the journey of the IT department
      • On the back of this strategy, the IT director was able to present the vision to the Exec Board, and begin the journey to transforming the IT department to build a more business focussed and effective IT department
